The new RIM BlackBerry™ PlayBook®, the tablet offering from the iconic handheld manufacturer, has received mixed reviews from critics, primarily due to its rather sparse nature. However, critics have agreed that the ongoing addition of features and apps will round out the PlayBook® so that it becomes a truly functional tablet.

Unfortunately, one of the handheld Blackberry’s® biggest disadvantages is the dated OS system; the new PlayBook’s® QNX-based Neutrino® OS is a great improvement, although critics do not believe it equal to some of its competitors. It does, however, offer simultaneous operation of a variety of apps, which means the PlayBook® is at least on the same playing field as its competitors.

The similarities may end there, however. Because Blackberry® plans to introduce new operations and apps over a ten-year time frame, this version of the tablet is very basic when compared to the iPad®. However, it is especially geared to Office® applications, making it a perennial favorite for business people and those who require more efficiency than flash.

Because of the structure of the OS, the Blackberry® PlayBook® runs multiple apps well. However, it does not phase them out as other systems do, so “out of memory” errors are common problems. Further, there are very few flashy apps, so the younger generation may find this tablet a bit tame. The operating system features a 1 GHz dual-core processor, and the tablet has front and rear cameras for excellent video capabilities. However, connectivity is obtained through a link to a phone and wi-fi, rather than an onboard 3G or 4G system.

How many apps are available for the Blackberry Playbook Tablet?

One of the biggest drawbacks is also the choice of apps. While there are plenty of music capabilities and photo programs, there is no on-board email, a basic requirement of most tablet users. Email will be integrated by a hookup to the phone, which means cumbersome usage problems. The tablet syncs with a laptop or desktop through Blackberry’s® software, but this has proven problematic for some users in the past.

Is the Blackberry Playbook Tablet secure?

One of the biggest advantages of the BlackBerry® layout, however, is its security. Because of the high level of security involved, some users are willing to work with the somewhat dated usage protocols to gain protection. For a business person in a highly confidential environment, the PlayBook® may be the best choice when compared to flashier and easier-to-use competitors.

Blackberry Playbook Tablet Reviews

Some critics feel that the PlayBook® offers great-looking apps which are not particularly useable. For someone interested in the user-based interests of a tablet, this may not be the wisest choice. However, for someone who is a BlackBerry® fan, the tablet will probably be a valuable addition to the technological arsenal.

However, the potential for development with the new PlayBook® may make it a good long-term investment. For someone who wants to integrate a tablet into an existing BlackBerry® framework, this model may be the beginning of a great networked system.

How much is the Blackberry Playbook Tablet?

The price for the new BlackBerry® PlayBook® will probably hover between $499 and $699. You may be able to find great deals on this tablet through Black Friday sales, both online and in stores.
