The new RIM BlackBerry™ PlayBook®, the tablet offering from the iconic handheld manufacturer, has received mixed reviews from critics, primarily due to its rather sparse nature. However, critics have agreed that the ongoing addition of features and apps will round out the PlayBook® so that it becomes a truly functional tablet.

Unfortunately, one of the handheld Blackberry’s® biggest disadvantages is the dated OS system; the new PlayBook’s® QNX-based Neutrino® OS is a great improvement, although critics do not believe it equal to some of its competitors. The operating system features a 1 GHz dual-core processor, and the tablet has front and rear cameras for excellent video capabilities. However, connectivity is obtained through a link to a phone and wi-fi, rather than an onboard 3G or 4G system.

However, the potential for development with the new PlayBook® may make it a good long-term investment. For someone who wants to integrate a tablet into an existing BlackBerry® framework, this model may be the beginning of a great networked system.
