Sesame Street® characters are always popular as icons for children’s toys, whether the figure is an “action figure” or imprinted on various items. One of Sesame Street’s® most popular characters in recent years has been Elmo, the cuddly, warm little “monster” with the sweet voice. Sesame Street’s® toys featuring Elmo have been huge sellers in the past few years, most notably with the “Tickle Me Elmo”™ doll released in 1996, which actually sparked arguments and fights among parents in toy stores after demand far exceeded the released number of dolls.

Despite this unfortunate episode in Elmo’s history, the manufacturers decided to take Elmo a step further, releasing the “TMX,”™ or “Tickle Me Elmo Ten,”™ in 2006. Unlike the former Elmo dolls, which were really just stuffed figures, TMX™ was a true interactive toy, allowing children to truly “play” with him. TMX™ would roll on the ground and beg the child to stop tickling him. Tyco®, Elmo’s producer, was on a roll with the new doll and began to plan a new type of interactive action-figure which would allow children to interact and learn at the same time.

Sesame Street’s® newest offering, “Let’s Rock! Elmo”™, is a fuzzy adaptation of the popular character with some “cool” accessories. Based in part on the “Elmo Rocks!” show featured at the Sesame Place Theme Park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, little Elmo is ready to sing and dance with children of all ages.
The basic “Let’s Rock! Elmo”™ package includes an Elmo doll with computer-enhanced technology which allows Elmo to “recognize” instruments he is given and play them accordingly. The starter set comes with a microphone, tambourine, drum set, and instructions to allow a child to get Elmo rocking.

There are also accessories which can be added to Elmo’s “band” for an additional charge. A guitar, keyboard, piano, and other character’s instruments are all available to give Elmo the complete musical ensemble to entertain his audience. All “Let’s Rock!”™ accessories for each Sesame Street® character are interchangeable, so a child can have an entire band of Sesame Street® characters playing various instruments and changing them around.

Elmo is not the only member of the “Let’s Rock!”™ family. There are versions available with “Let’s Rock! Grover”™ and “Let’s Rock! Cookie Monster”™accessories. These also work with the “Let’s Rock! Elmo”™ character, allowing Elmo a wide range of musical abilities.
Kids can also get in on the act by playing the instruments themselves. While Elmo sings—he has a built-in library of six rock songs—little hands can play the drums, guitar, keyboard, or sing along. Elmo features a sporty concert tee shirt to help him look the part of a rock star. Elmo can hold the microphone, play the drums, and sing, all at the same time. His plush body is durable and can withstand the dancing and playing of small children well, although care must be taken not to allow the children to throw the toys against things in order to increase their longevity. Under normal wear conditions, however, Elmo seems to be able to hold his own.

Elmo stands about 14 inches tall, and requires six AA batteries. The toy is rated for ages 1.5 to four years. The initial unit can cost anywhere from $48.00 to $68.00, depending on the merchant, and additional accessories are around $14.98 to $29.98 each on average. One drawback may be the lack of ability to adjust the sound, which means Elmo will play at the same volume, even when you want it quiet.
Of course, one of the best things about the “Let’s Rock! Elmo”™ family of toys is that they are not quiet, sit-down activities. Playing with Elmo and his band instruments will encourage kids to get up and move, developing musical talents and giving much-needed exercise. Beginning at 18 months, children can develop motor skills, dexterity, and even musical ability with Elmo by singing along, dancing to the music, and playing the instruments. This means that your child will be getting education along with fun—always a great combination.

Black Friday sales will quickly exhaust their supplies, so it might be a good plan to make the toy store your first stop on your Black Friday runs.
