A Sleek Tablet Look and Feel
The Tablet S™ begins with its unique and functional design. Unlike flat tablets, this unit has a smooth, curved frame, shaped rather like a thin book which has been folded open and under. This thicker-on-the-end framework provides a nice benefit; you can prop the table on a table when you type, and the feel is much more natural to your hands—unlike most “flat” tablets. Not only is it functional, but the sleek casing is truly attractive, giving you a tablet look that few others can boast.
The Sony Tablet S – More than Just a Pretty Face
The advantages of the Tablet S™ do not stop with its casing, however. Sony™ has been hesitant to enter the tablet market until they got just the unit they wanted to promote, and it seems that time has come. Rather than a cheap knock-off of an Android®, Sony™ has produced a truly functional tablet that utilizes the best of the features of many of its competitors.
The QWERTY keyboard has a right-side number pad, a great improvement over the iPad’s® switchable system. The touch screen is incredibly smooth and responsive, providing a great interaction experience with the unit at all angles. The uniquely-shaped casing also makes the tablet easy to hold in one hand.
The unit features a dual-core 1GHz processor, identical to most major tablet competitors, and a rather small 1GB of RAM. However, there is an SD expansion slot, a feature missing on many of the other top tablets who load on more memory from the start. There are 16GB and 32GB storage options available. Priced to sell at a baseline $499 for the 16GB version, this tablet competes at all levels with its brothers.
Sony Tablet S Disadvantages
However, there is one disadvantage to the reasonably-priced 16GB version; Sony™ has chosen to dedicate a great deal of the available memory to operating system storage, which is partitioned from the useable memory storage. All-in-all, heavy media users may find the 16GB storage a bit lean for their needs; the onboard SD expansion can help solve that problem, but the 32GB version may be a better solution overall.
What are the apps like for the Sony Tablet S?
The featured apps are all that you would expect from a technological leader like Sony™. Utilizing the familiar Android® dedicated operating system, users can download a variety of apps from both Sony™ and the Android® market. Sony has tweaked the general interface used by Android®, however, in an attempt to make the Tablet S® more user-friendly. Handy on-screen buttons allow you to group your favorite apps and some dedicated widgets make it easy to access social media, music, and video.
